I want to support this request. I don't bother to type dpkg -i, but I do bother telling my wife to do so :)
It would be great if you could tell synaptic to install a package from a file and if synaptic would install all dependecies automatically.

Thanks for your feature request.

I have done some prototype work for a direct deb installer for ubuntu at http://people.ubuntu.com/~mvo/gdebi

(be careful, it\'s still development software). If you are interessted testing it, please let me know via email.

Cheers,
 Michael

Hi,

first of all, thanks for this truly GREAT program! I've been using it for several years now and I absolutely love it.

There is but one thing I've been missing all along: the possibility to install separate .deb packages not available from a repository. Something like: "File --> Install package", bad choice perhaps, but I think you know what I'm getting at.

Maybe it should be in an "Advanced/Expert user" mode, similar to what dselect has?  (Maybe such a scheme Newbie/Expert mode could even be used throughout the program to reduce the amount of buttons and gauges visible in Newbie user mode?)

Regards
