Fixed by commit commit d8a78332490cd5a5928d6a23d06797ca9caa2b45:

The first alias contained in a blind list is now expanded. The
mh-alias(5) man page was updated to show that blind lists must not be terminated with, or contain, a trailing semicolon. I think that was just a mistake in the man page.

Incidentally, this is a bug of such long standing that it's actually mentioned in the mh-alias(5) manpage. If we ever fix this we should remember to edit the manpage :-)

Given a blind alias of forward references such as the following

furby: Pomes Posse: paul, rolf, mary, sam, eliot ;

paul: Paul Pomes <ppomes@ieee.org>
rolf: Rolf Lachmayr <rolf@foo.org>
mary: Mary Knoll <mary@bar.org>
sam: Sam Spade <sam@airplane.org>
eliot: Eliot Ness <ellie@bob-barker.com>

ali (and other nmh commands) correctly expand rolf, mary, and sam, but
leave paul and eliot alone. None of these names represent accounts on the
local machine. This causes send to (correctly) fail.
