When you type a command that WeeChat does not recognize, it should pass it on to the server. I don't know if this is official IRC guidelines, but a lot of other clients do it (sounds like a good reason in this instance :).

Example:

On my server we have the m_elmer module loaded for occasional use. This adds a "Elmer <nick>" command that the server understands. In WeeChat, "/elmer <nick>"  gives "WeeChat Error: unknown command "elmer" (type /help for help)". The work-around is to send a message to ircd ("/msg ircd elmer ..."), but this is a little cumbersome next to other IRC clients.

Thanks :)
