Just knowing that someone is working on something doesn't tell you what they are doing with it. They could be doing something completely opposite of what you want to do, or something entirely unrelated.

This is an incentive to publish what you do, and to do so early and often. If you want others to contribute to what you are doing, you should publish often, so other can see what you did and work on it. If you don't, others might duplicate your work and do it faster, and your contribution will end up in a dry branch.

In a collaborative environment, particularly when there are thousands of users, it is very useful to know if there are others who are like me interested in the same topic, who are like me willing to work on the same learning object.  Take the example of a google document, where several users collaboratively editing the same.

Also in community portals, it is important to know, if there are others who are currently logged in, etc.  This allows the possibility of knowing, networking, meeting them in a jabber room etc.

I personally would like to give indications to others that some one is working.

However, what you are saying is good, if not knowing is an incentive of a sort.  Does this help people to collaborate more vigorously than in case where they know that someone is working.

It is no-one's bussiness whether I am working on an object or not, and I shouldn't care whether others are doing it! What I do in my private space of unpublished versions concerns only me.

If two people are working concurrently in the same branch, I expect a branch resolution protocol to ensue: two successor versions of the same object will appear in the history, and the user will be able to compare them and, if it makes sense, merge them.

This is the only indication other users have to know that some one is also working on the current object.  Till we have another way of indicating, I suggest we keep it.

I will, however, close this only after we reach an agreement on this.

Currently, the version tree at <http://cselfish.selfplatform.eu:8081/selfplatform/versions_tree_content?ssid=968&cssid=955> displays a version 1.1 by Rajiv, which selfuser can see but not edir. I Suspect this may be a version that was saved, but not published. If this is the case, the version should be invisible to other users.
