this really is a significant problem.  i have 5 tabs open, there are over 30 gnash processes running, my cpu is pegged at 100%, and my mouse cursor is jumpy.  these are relatively normal websites: anandtech, firingsquad, arstechnica, etc.  a popup blocker is irrelevant since these sites don't have popups.  i really can't consider switching to or endorsing gnash if it is going to make my system perform like a slug.

is the thread-safe work a high priority?  how much is there to do?  and how long (approximately) do you anticipate it will take to get it done?

The Adobe plugin is a true plugin, in that it installs as part of Firefox as a shared library. Because Gnash is not yet completely thread safe, the Gnash plugin just fork & exec's the standalone player, which is why you have multiple copies running if there are multiple flash animations. Until Gnash's librsaries are completely thread safe, we can't really fix this in a sensible way.

Me, I'd install AdBlock Plus. :-)

If the page has too many flash segments, then the browser will start to crawl and eventually slows down the machine.

I just forgot to mention that I have opened 6 pages with different flash segments in tabs when it crossed the 250 mark.

Later, I tested the same number of pages with adobe flash plugin and it worked smoothly. I am trying to benchmark both the plugins by switching between them.

I get 12 gnash processes on that page, which is still enough to slow many systems down. That in itself isn't a bug, just what you deserve for visiting sites that are only there to get advertising revenue.

250 processes sounds a bit excessive, though I doubt Gnash is spawning them when it's not supposed to. Possibly it's failing to shut down after leaving a page.

Is it just that page, or do you find it with other sites?

gnash-plugin seems to be spawning too much processes and subsequently the desktop applications hang up. I tried the following page http://www.netbks.com/page/18 and there are more than 250 process when I tried ps -e.

OS: Fedora 10
Browser: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4
