Just tested this.  It works just fine.

could you try running windowmaker as a WM on your notebook if you aren't already?
When I export from my sun to my notebook I cna hae trouble if I run Xserver under windows rootless, but if I run it rooted and then run windowmaker exported too, then it works.

To me this looks like you get the wrong window border computation when working on the remote display. I just don't understand why this could happen. The values that get ignored are from a reparent event, could you please try to debug that? I have no clue, what is going on there.

It also seem to be related to something that is inside your defaults file. Perhaps you shoudl try again an report the values that end up in your .GNUstepDefaults in either case.

I've here my notebook and the desktop, both i386, and just retested again.

  • I ssh from desktop to the notebook
  • throw away all my defaults, rm -rf ~/GNUstep
  • start Gorm, that works well then via ssh and also works well locally

then test the other way around:

  • I ssh from notebook to desktop
  • throw away all my defaults, rm -rf ~/GNUstep
  • start Gorm, and it does not work via ssh, but works well when using it locally

problem:

  • The main menu is not usable, nothing happens on clicks
  • right click in a window, then the context main menu appears

   a) not below the mouse, but on the left border of the screen, and is also not usable

  • pulldown menus seem to have the same problems,
  • buttons, and switching between pallets works

setup on the notebook and desktop are the same:
openbsd 4.4, i386
gnustep-make-2.0.8
gnustep-base-1.18.0p0
gnustep-back-0.16.0 (using xlib)
gnustep-gui-0.16.0
gnustep-gorm-1.2.8
libffi-3.0.8

on the desktop, there is a ati-radeon driver used, on the notebook intel.
display resolution on the notebook: 1280x768
display resolution on the desktop: 1920x1200

on both sides, in sshd_config, X11 forwarding is configured like this:
X11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10
X11UseLocalhost yes

Then I tried an xhost + on the notebook
again logged into the desktiop from the notebook
and change the DISPLAY variable to <notebookIP>:0.0 and started Gorm, and it started and was behaving well.
however, when I logout, and login again, without changing the DISPLAY variable, then start Gorm, it doesn't behave correctly anymore.

below the log output when starting it, and clicking on the main menu once:

I have a reasonably similar setup: I ssh into an OpenBSD/sparc32 box.
Since the recent fixes to gui, everything works reasonably on Sparc again. Thus I tried both exporting display the usual way as of tunneling it with ssh -X as you do.

Works fine in both cases for me...

I export to a linux machine running windowmaker. I use xlib backent on the OpenBSD/sparc machine.

Thus it is something specific to your setup. Does it work when running locally? Can you check or is it a headless machine?
Can yo ucheck if using export DISPLAY=xxx:0 instead owrks (provided you have correct rights on the X server.. check with a non gnustep app first)

Somehow you ended up with negative coordinates in your settings. Of course this cannot work. If you have a reproducable way of getting that error, we could try to avoid it.

The idea of saving the resolution in the defaults file is to adjust the window frame when the resolution is different. When you store a frame at a given resolution it might not fit onto a smaller screen. This mechanism tries to adjust things, but in your case something goes horribly wrong.

Maybe it is a general problem to save the display resolution in the defaults, and that is the reason, why remote apps may not work via ssh -X, in case the local and remove resolution are different.
Local apps are now working well, but remote apps still fail to start.

after removing the .GNUstepDefaults file on the remote machine, then at least the Gorm inspector and palette window show up. however, the menu does still not work, and I get a lot of those x errors in the console when I click on those windows and the menu.

I just figured out, this is not a problem related to ssh.

The problem seems to have to do with the resolution, or switching resolutions on a desktop, but still using the same .GNUstepDefaults file.

I figured that out, after I replaced the ati driver with vesa driver in my xorg.conf file, and restarted X11. Then the resolution switched from 1920x1200 to something very small. I logged in again, and then, no problem to start SimpleAgenda or Gorm.

Then replacing the xorg.conf again, and restarting X11 again, and relogin again.
Then at least the problem with the strange negative width of the window disappeared silently, however, the applications still behaved strange. E.g. on PC did not showed the menu when clicking the dock icon, and also the inspectors and palettes window of the INspector did not open.

Therefore I thought it might have to be sth. to do with the defaults. Therefore I removed my .GNUstepDefaults, and started trying those applications again. and what can I say, they just work now.

I saved the problematic .GNUstepDefaults file, will take a look on it later today, to figure out, which of those defaults in there caused the actual problem.

when I change GSBackHandlesWindowDecorations, then the beginning looks like this:

$ defaults write NSGlobalDomain GSBackHandlesWindowDecorations NO
$ ProjectCenter

I also recognized, when I right click on the dock icon, then not the usual "Unhide here", "Hide", "Set Icon...", menu appears, but instead a second PC application menu appears on the screen, releasing the mouse button, makes it disappear. Trying to moving the ordinary PC application menu lets it disappearing, and now on subsequent startups, I do not even see the application menu anymore.

My problem with missing SHM support seems to be completely unrelated to yours (it is just a drawing glitch with cairo).

The setting for window decoration is GSBackHandlesWindowDecorations. You should also try to switch off GSFontAntiAlias, I am really puzzled by the line about "MIT-SHM", as far as I remember the xlib backend doesn't even try to use SHM and it surely wont work over a remote display.

what is the default to change the behavior whether gnustep or the x server draws the window decorations, I just recognized the other lines after the lines I just pasted?
Maybe I could try switch that.

In general, they are starting, at least the menu and the dock icon are showing upon the local machine.

IIRC that worked here for me, before I switched the local desktop from Linux to OpenBSD.

maybe it has sth. to do with the first line of the console log:
Xlib:  extension "MIT-SHM" missing on display "localhost:11.0".

did not someone else had a problem recently either on the mailing list or here in another bug, when SHM was not availalble?

yes, localhost:11.0 is fine, although unusual, I do use 10:0
X tunneling works by remapping to a local display (can cause trouble with multiple machines and the font cache, thus indeed, having different display numbers might be a good idea)

Remote host: FreeBSD/x86
Local host: Gentoo Linux /x86, with WindowMaker.

GNUstep works fine on both systems when used locally.

I just tried opening Ink Vespucci and they open just fine.

I admit however that I more than once tried to connect through ssh to my box at home and most apps do start, but no gnustep apps...

yes, that is the right DISPLAY, other applications, e.g. xclock work fine.

I think I clicked some times onto the PC menu, and then pressed ctrl-c in the console where I started PC.

I'll post output of starting up Gorm, in the evening.
IIRC, this did not had the negative size problem.
IIRC, the negative size problem only showed up, when I pressed Ctrl-C in the PC console, and then the panel, asking me whether I am really sure, to close PC. This panel was only about 2 pixels wide.

Gorm just quitted after I pressed CTRL-C in the console where I had it running.

I noticed the negative view size in your output. I don't get that when starting up ProjectCenter. Did you do anything special or is this already reported when the menu gets shown?

It could well be that your problem is less due to the remote connection than to that issue.

The other thing that looks strange to me is the name of the display. Is it really localhost:11.0? It may be that GNUstep for some reason fails to produce the proper display name and then has a screwed up connection to the X server.

I'm logged in from one OpenBSD 4.4 i386 host to another one, via ssh -X.
When I start e.g. ProjectCenter or Gorm, then the app icon shows up, and the menu appears. I see a lot of error messages in the console output, as an example, the output of ProjectCenter startup is appended. Clicking on the menu, only produces more errors on the console, but do not work, also keyboard shortcuts do not work.
The local windowmanager is windowmaker.
The versions of gnustep installed on the remote host are the following:

/usr/sbin/pkg_info | grep gnust
gnustep-back-0.16.0 GNUstep gui backend
gnustep-base-1.18.0p0 GNUstep base library
gnustep-gorm-1.2.8  GORM: Graphical Object Relationship Modeller
gnustep-gui-0.16.0  GNUstep gui library
gnustep-make-2.0.7  GNUstep makefile package
gnustep-projectcenter-0.5.0 GNUstep ProjectCenter

gnustep-back is configured with: --with-x --enable-graphics=xlib --disable-glitz.

no problem to run those applications on the remote host locally, there the window manager is also windowmaker.
