Also, what is the correct behaviour when applying multiple patches in reverse (-R) (--dry-run or not)?

It seems logically necessary that hunks should be reversed from last to first, but POSIX doesn't address this as far as I can see. Presumably this has never worked on any patch implementation, so it's open to define the correct behaviour, or make it specifically undefined.

When a patch modifies the same file more than once and the changes conflict, patch --dry-run will fail even for patches
which would apply without --dry-run.
