maxima-5.21.1-2squeeze in parkes works and "run_testsuite();" runs without unexpected errors after installing maxima-test.

SBCL is unrelated to the original problem -- Maxima supports many Common Lisp implementation of which GCL is used in Debian and is less maintained or standard-compliant than SBCL or other implementations but natively supports readline and is faster for Maxima.  So the problem can be solved by upgrading to parkes or installing Maxima manually with SBCL instead of GCL.

perhaps the package is missing a dependency on sbcl for building

Sorry, I didn't use the repo package and then maybe my latter comment has no sense. Also Masloswski gave a similar solution at the mailing list some time before.

I solved it in an easy way (without using of patches). I installed sbcl and run "./configure --with-sbcl" and all worked correctly. I used version 5.21.1.

It works with the patch from http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=27;bug=474909 after removing the part uncommenting a line in the manual. This patch was for a similar bug affecting i386, it replaces GCL with SBCL.

Disadvantages of the patch:
- no header shown on start
- missing readline support (use rmaxima which requires rlwrap instead)
- it's slower according to other messages in the Debian bug log.

Segmentation fault is given when you run the maxima from repo in mipsel
