This bit is only related to the HV write methods. Normal
ISP write operations work differently.

Second, the most interesting question is: what is AVR Studio
doing?

First, I don't think the STK500v2 protocol has ever been defined
with a bootloader in mind.

Second, the most interesting question is: what is AVR Studio
doing?

Sat 29 Jan 2011 03:05:21 AM UTC, original submission:

I just wrote a stk500v2 protocol for my own use. After some debugging and a peek at the avrdude code, I find the following comment in sk500v2.c - "We set bit 6 to indicate this is the very
last page to be programmed, whatever this means -- we just pretend
we don't know any better. ;-)"

The avrdude code sets bit 6 to '1' always...

I was using bit 6 (which should be only set on the last page to be
programmed) to tell the programmer to re-enable the RWW block of
flash after this page is written - which I believe is it's intended function.

Bob
... just trying to make a good thing better.
