I didn't have the time to investigate it yet. In any case, I will add an option to automatically kill sope.sh after some time. I hope you can bear pressing ^C whenever it happes for now.

1. No, it's the default setting.
2. Only exiftool is installed, no mediainfo
3. Yes, some texts to show all information about the video file
4. When the bug happens, the exiftool is not running. But I forgot to check scope.sh. I'll update the status soon.

Okay, so it's caused by scope.sh, the preview script. What program does your scope.sh use for previewing movies?

1. did you change scope.sh or do you just use the stock scope.sh with "--copy-config=scope" or something?
2. do you have exiftool or mediainfo installed?
3. do you see any information in the right column when selecting avi files?
4. I wonder if scope.sh is taking so long or if there was some kind of race condition within ranger. Can you check whether a scope.sh, exiftool or mediainfo is running when this happens?

Unfortunately, the problem is just happened again. This time I checked the task list, and found:

Task View
Getting preview of movie.avi

I closed mpalyer and waited almost 3min. ranger still "Getting preview ..." and meanwhile cpu usage was 100%

Then I killed this task in task view, ranger was back to the normal status and cpu was calm.

Hi Roman Z.

I tired really hard to reproduce this bug again. But it seems all work well since I reported it... I do see several times 100% cpu usage by ranger, not in my dream. Thanks for your tips, which are really useful. So I will update the evidence if I can catch the bug.

I can't reproduce it. Can you?

If ranger uses a lot of CPU, press "w" to get into the task view to see what it's doing. Press Ctrl+C to stop tasks.

3.7.10-1-ARCH x86_64
ranger 1.6.0
python 3.3.0

Used ranger to open avi file in mplayer. CPU was always occupied, even maplayer was exited.
