There have been several patches in the last versions to improve Gnutella/G2 support, therefore this report is closed.
If you still experience this problem with MLDonkey > 2.7.6 please report back.

that is in releases from .30ac on. i downgrade this bug because the now implemented behavour should not do any harm. but we should realy only request so much gwc's that we can connect....

i just changed g/g2 to only send requests once every day. i will commit this change to svn shortly. this is not a good solution but at least it should not hurt the network anymore.

MLDonkey keeps hammering dead webcaches; my webcache has been removed nearly 2 years ago and still receives 300k+ hits per week; the majority thereof being caused by MLdonkey/2.5-28.

Regarding the recent one-request-per-hour issue, 90% of the MLDK requests come from 2.5-28 (without any letter appended). You should really use exponential back off and give up if you've queried a single GWebCache 3 times a day.

So, compression is implemented in versions >= 2-5-25 ?

Problem is that lots of users use version 2-5-16+patches
but the bug seems only to be fixed in version 2-5-25+,
current version is 2-5-28p

Changing severity to 1 because this bug might be solved in current CVS release.

Just in case: This doesn't look already fixed in MLDK 2.5-21. I found such a peer in the logs sending over 500 requests a day. 20 reqs/hour don't seem so terrible for a
single peer (it still is though). The frequency of about one request per 2 minutes is completely intolerable.

I've seen MLDK 2.5-4 and 2.5-16 sending over 1200 hostfile requests a day with an interval of about a minute. This is far too frequent and too much. You must apply a reasonable hardlimit e.g., 10 request per hour and maybe 50 over a day. Of course not for a single GWC but in total. The usual policy is to contact a single GWC not more than once per hour.
A possible reason is that the ISP blocks the Gnutella protocol but doesn't block GWC requests since the latter are "normal" HTTP requests. Of course any other malfunction/bug/problem which causes the impossibility to connect to other Gnutella peers could cause the same problem i.e., running out of cached peer addresses.
If a user cannot connect to the Gnutella network, he just can't. Hammering GWCs for more addresses won't help anyone but actually harm the network.
