No response since two years, so I'm closing this.

I suspect that you've downloaded the zip file, but this for Windows only.  Instead, you should use the compressed tarball (either .tar.bz2 or .tar.gz).

I have tried to install FreeType, but I'm having trouble with the configure file.  I have found that most of the issues came from it having both /n and /r.  I ran it though a filter that got rid of all /r characters, but it still doesn't work.  Here's what I get currently.

FreeType build system -- automatic system detection

The following settings are used:

  platform                    unix
  compiler                    cc
  configuration directory     ./builds/unix
  configuration rules         ./builds/unix/unix.mk

If this does not correspond to your system or settings please remove the file
`config.mk' from this directory then read the INSTALL file for help.

Otherwise, simply type `make' again to build the library,
or `make refdoc' to build the API reference (the latter needs python).

cd builds/unix; ./configure
/bin/sh: ./configure: /bin/sh^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory
make: * [setup] Error 126
