You're right - the problem is caused by NetworkManager. Due to some settings inherited from upstream it does not manage connections listed in /etc/network/interfaces configured during the installation. You can easily fix it by yourself editing the file /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and changing managed=false to managed=true in the [ifupdown] section. I'll ask on gnewsense-dev if it can be changed for default gNewSense installation. (will DTRT if so)

After a clean installation and reboot, NetworkManager shows "no network" connection, yet the PC is on the network (DHCP in this case).

After installing Evolution, the program (Evolution) will not Send/Receive email; the button is greyed out.  It must be linked to the NetworkManager because, if I kill the NetworkManager process and restart Evolution, the Send/Receive button works and I am able to receive email without an issue.
