The main advantage of rdiff-backup (IMHO) is that the mirror is, as much as possible, a simple copy of the original file so that restoring is very easy. We won't give up on this principle.

My suggestion is to place the backup on a compressing file system if it's important to you.

Any news about this request?

I've just switched from dump to rdiff-backup: now the size of the backup is 130GB instead of 30GB :(

Compression would be a really nice feature.

That would be good if backup files on target directory was compressed. (not huge tar.gz, still like mirror, but each file is compressed.
