It looks like Konversation can be minimized. This would normally show up (most likely) in other window managers that have start bars as an icon. So my guess is that the first time you run the command, Konversation starts hidden. The second time, if it doesn't show up, is maybe because you are running it too soon, so the first Konversation instance hasn't gotten to the point where it will register that it's being called again (thus creating a second instance, or maybe just dropping that second instance all together, I can't say specifics).

The third time you run the command, Konversation should now be up and running, and can recognize that it's being called again, so it responds by un-hiding.

This is just a guess based on my experience with other software that can hide itself, like Skype, so don't take my word on it, but I'd start looking here.

Also, why C-t k won't kill Konversation will be for the same reasons. Just because the window is destroyed the "daemon" doesn't also get destroyed. You would need to use C-q or C-w inside Konversation, whichever it responds to to quit. Alternatively, there might be a setting where destroying the window also destroys the daemon.

Hope that helps. Potentially relevant documentation from Konversations site below.

'''
Added a "Show/Hide Konversation" action that can be used to toggle the minimized state of the Konversation window or, if the tray icon is enabled, its visibility. Additionally, the window will always be moved to the current virtual desktop if shown using this action (if the window is already shown on another desktop, it will be moved to the current desktop rather than hidden).

c-t ! konversation

select irc server dialog is shown in current frame, I select an irc server, and the frame is emtpy.

c-t ! konversation

sometimes konversation is shown, sometimes nothing

c-t ! konversation

now konversation is visible if try 2 didn't work

Also, it seems to leave konversation instances hanging around that have to be killed manually.  I'm guessing c-t k doesn't close the app because of some further wierdness.
