Using gnokii --smsreader I can now receive messages, thank you VERY MUCH for fixing this :)

I haven't confirmed it with gnome-phone-manager (trouble building it) but I suppose it will work there too.

I've committed to CVS a fix tested with Huawei E172 which showed the same problem. Please test it with your device.

Note that I could only receive notifications when configuring gnome-phone-manager to use port /dev/ttyUSB1 not ttyUSB0, just like it is written in this page

That's correct. I receive SMS, but it's not reported. My apologies if that's unclear in my inital bug report.

Basically what I do is:

1. Start gnokii --smsreader
2. Send a SMS to the device from another phone
3. Wait for it to be received, but --smsreader remains silent
4. Give up, and press Ctrl-C

So yes, there's a pause between "Entered sms reader mode" and "Shutting down". "Shutting down" doesn't happen until I press Ctrl-C.

At this point I usually start xgnokii or use gnokii --getsms to check for new messages.

Is there some kind of a pause between:
 Entered sms reader mode...
 Shutting down
I just checked and for me it just waits for incoming SMS there. Do you receive SMS? And it is not reported?

gnokii --getsms SM 1 end works fine, the new message is correctly set as "Unread" the first time.

gnokii --showsmsfolderstatus
No. Name                               Id #Msg
==============================================
  0 Internal memory                    ME    0
  1 Combined ME and SIM phonebook      MT    0
  2 SIM card                           SM   20
  3 SMS Status Reports                 SR   20

I tried the changes suggested in comment 4 and I'm attaching a debug log. It didn't change the behaviour of --smsreader, but hopefully the log is useful.

From your log:
Received message type 29
Entered sms reader mode...
[1] Shutting down
Exiting sms reader mode...

gnokii goes into [1] just when SIGINT (ctrl-c) is caught. You may set bshutdown to false before signal() call in gnokii/gnokii-sms.c::smsreader() to be sure.

What about gnokii --getsms? Is it just --smsreader that doesn't work?

I'm attaching a log of output from gnokii --smsreader while I send SMS to the device.

The Huawei E220 (a HSDPA USB modem, not a phone) can send, but not receive SMS.

gnokii --smsreader doesn't work, and nothing obvious (to me) is visible in the debug log.

With xgnokii it's possible to view contacts and stored SMS, incoming ones are properly marked as unread.

Using gnokii 0.6.27, from Debian unstable, with these settings:

[global]
port = /dev/ttyUSB0
model = AT
initlength = default
connection = serial
use_locking = yes
serial_baudrate = 19200
smsc_timeout = 10
[xgnokii]
allow_breakage = 0
[gnokiid]
bindir = /usr/sbin/

It's identified as:

Manufacturer : huawei
Model        : E220
Product name : E220
Revision     : 11.117.04.00.24

I originally filed this as a bug against gnome-phone-manager, but I suppose it belongs here.
