Version 2.4.4 suffered from too aggressive flattening of Bézier curves, which could potentially explain this bug. It is very possible that it is fixed since version 2.4.6.

I can confirm the problems.  Unfortunately, the renderer for PostScript based fonts is the weakest part of FreeType; nobody is currently working on it.  Probably the best solution for now is to activate the autohinter.

It looks somewhat better with (but still not as good as with the other renderers) with ftview -l 1, -l 3 and -l 5

The AS Garamond font (downloadable at e.g. http://dasmagazin.blankpage.ch/dasMagazin/fonts/AS_Garamond.otf ) looks quite odd when rendered with FreeType 2.4.4 at sizes up to around 24px.

In "ftview 24 AS_Garamond.otf", look at the O character (looks more like ()), the upper part of the Q, the lower part of the S, ...

The font is rendered well in fontforge and with whatever renderer that other OS uses.
