I agree, it's strange. As usual, please provide ugly
examples on the freetype-devel list...

That's right. The dots are symmetrical with respect to the bottom stem in Ydieresis, whereas they are symmetrical with respect to the upper serifs in Upsilondieresis. Ydieresis conforms to the font spirit.

Regardless of this, isn't it strange that dots ruin aliasing on the opposite side of the glyph at size 15?

The glyphs are indeed different. In Ydieresis, the dieresis dots
are positioned a bit more to the left than in Upsilondieresis.

Just to refresh this bug...

Same font, DejaVu Serif 2.15 at size 15, but why Upsilondieresis is differnt from Ydieresis??? I would expect the same rendering for the same shape. Or is it not the same?

Look at the first glyphs like this:

ftview -f 314 15 DejaVuLGCSerif.ttf
ftview -f 759 15 DejaVuLGCSerif.ttf

Could this be due to some subtle arch/os differences?

Interesting. Using times.ttf version 3.00 and
DejaVuSerif.ttf 2.11, it looks fine for me.

Please provide snapshots.

I beg to differ. This is on Fedora Core 6 i386. Please reopen the bug. Please describe how you can't repeat that.

This is how to see it with DejaVu Serif 2.15 or 2.11:
1) ftview -f 877 15 DejaVuLGCSerif.ttf
2) look at the second glyph "б", and compare to "о"
3) turning hinting off by pressing [H] removes the glitch

This is how to see it with Times New Roman 3.06 from euupdate:
1) ftview -f 602 17 Times.ttf
2) look at the second glyph "б", and compare to "о"
3) turning hinting off by pressing [H] removes the glitch

Note ppems! They're important!

I can't repeat this. According to the start of this
bug report, you are talking about `full hinting', and
IMHO it looks good with both DejaVu Serif and Times New
Roman.

Unfortunately no. "б" still looks bad at 13-15 points with some serif fonts, such as Deja Vu Serif and Times New Roman.

This seems to be fixed with the current CVS.
Please test!

Using 10-Jan-07 CVS snapshot, U+0431 looks two times too bold on the left side in DejaVu Serif with full hinting at 15 ppem. It looks good without full hinting. See second glyth in the attached snapshot. This is painfully obvious at 15 ppem and to a lesser extent at other sizes. This is also visible with Times New Roman at around 15 ppem. This is the only glyth with this problem. Six "6" is similar in spirit but looks good.
