Please give latest startpar a try as there have been a lot of changes.

This was OpenSuSE 11.1. I'll try to check when I get access to the system again.

The silly header combo was basically

# Provides: foo
# Should-Start: foo

Should-Start is clearly a mistake, possibly a misread.

I'm not able to reproduce, please provide the output of the
command

rpm -qi sysvinit sysvinit-tools

Sat 15 Oct 2011 06:41:55 AM UTC, original submission:

We accidentally incorrectly set up our LSB headers, which caused SuSE to create an /etc/init.d/.depend.stop graph with the entry:

splunk: splunk

this caused startpar to segfault when trying to build the graph, eg:

Oct 14 22:55:28 linux-h8qs init: Switching to runlevel: 5
Oct 14 22:55:28 linux-h8qs kernel: startpar[9241]: segfault at 7fff2650fff8 ip 0000000000404915 sp 00007fff26510000 error 6 in startpar[400000+6000]

you can reach me, if desired, at jrodman AT splunk DOT com

Obviously, we worked around by removing our stupid incorrect LSB header.
