I tried with GNOPPIX 0.8 and ReiserFS and got the same trouble. Gnoppix bootloader is installed on hda6. I tried to chainload that loader from my original grub installation in MBR but the Gnoppix bootloader wasn't recognized as being a known loader. After that, I copied the Gnoppix menu.lst entry into the original menu.lst. Gnoppix started but initrd wasn't found. I changed the menu.lst entry to /boot/initrd.gz which worked but after that the root partition was not recognized.

Si "After Install Boot Fails"

title Windows XX
chainloader=(hd0,0)+1

ext3 installed failed as well, I've installed debian sid, if I can find some more HD space, I might keep on trying.

I just installed Gnoppix and when GRUB trys to start it, it says that it can't recognize the partition type of the root partition, even though it seems to know it's 0x82 (if I'm reading that right, that means ext2, which is exactly what it is). I'm going to try reinstalling with ext3, but I thought it might be a good idea to mention this first. This is installing Gnoppix 0.7 BETA.

Note:
You've got my vote for a forum, and for Mozilla Firebird too, the first command I give Gnoppix will probably be apt-get install mozilla-firebird
