Well, the log says that the AVRISPmkII complains about a
collision on the programming lines. This smells like a
hardware issue of some kind, or maybe a firmware issue.

(Btw., the stderr from avrdude .... -vvvv would have
sufficed, rather than the dtruss logs.)

Anyway, given this reports dates back more than 2 years now, and with
all the recent AVRDUDE bugfixes and improvements for Xmega devices,
and given that I've been using the AVRISPmkII routinely as part of
testing all this, I'd kindly ask you to test everything again:

. using a recent AVRISPmkII firmware (recent AVR Studio 4.x is fine,
5.x not strictly needed)

. using a current AVRDUDE version (from SVN)

If you cannot use the SVN version directly, just tell me, and I'll
roll a beta tarball, and upload it to savannah.

I lied. In fact, this site works correctly in Chromium with the same Gnash plugin that fails in Firefox. 1099 Software

328p log is indeed from #1.

#2 is dead. I'll speak of it no more ;->

OK, #2 is not interesting for me, as it uses a completely
different access method from AVRDUDE's point of view (no
libusb involved).

I hope the 328p log is from setup #1 then, is it? I'll have
a look into those files later on, thanks!

OK, a few more questions then:

> WORKS:
> host: macbook pro running OSX 10.5.8
> target: atmega328p
> host protocol: ???

How is the atmega328p connected? Is that some kind of RS-232
to USB adapter? Or is that an AVRISPmkII? In other words:
which -c and -P option are you using?

> WORKS:
> host: same
> target: same
> host protocol: ???
> target protocol: stk500v1 to download program to arduino bootloader.

Again, through some kind of RS-232 converter? (-c/-P would
be helpful)

> FAILS:
> host: same
> target: xmega128a1
> host protocol: ???
> target protocol: PDI

I take it that's an AVRISPmkII, is it?

Apologies for the confusion Joerg. I was just trying to supply complete information about what was working and about what was not. So, let me repeat in a hopefully more clean manner. When I get home I'll send the dtruss log.

BTW: thanks, never knew dtruss ran on OSX. That will make debugging lots of things hugely easier.

There is no real "switch configuration" done. It's just that
as part from the normal "hello!" to a USB device, selecting a
configuration is just one step out of many (where most devices
only support a single configuration anyway, including all the
Atmel tools AVRDUDE is about to handle).

Sorry, the remainder of your message sounds a little confusing
to me. It mixes host protocols (like STK500v1) and target
protocols (like ISP vs. PDI). Also, at this point of the game,
the target protocol to be selected should not matter at all,
as we are still in the "hello" phase, starting up with the
USB device.

If you've got something that is working and something that
isn't, I'd ask you to get me "dtruss" traces of both setups,
so I can compare them.

More info: I can upload from the same machine and avrisp2 to a328p using stk500v1 or ISP. Even with PDI, avrdude sees the avrisp2, including recognizing its serial number.

Is it possible that in order to switch usb configuration (whatever that means;->), that the usb device needed to be opened differently?

In any case, I'm running OSX 10.5.8. Not sure what version of libusb I'm running, probably whatever came with crosspack.

Thanks

That smells like a libusb problem.

What version of libusb are you using, and what operating
system and OS version?

Doc says:
avrisp2 Atmel AVR ISP mkII in ISP mode, in PDI mode for ATxmega devices, ...

When I give the following command line:
avrdude -C.../avrdude.conf -v -v -v -v -patxmega128a1 -cavrisp2
-Pusb -Uflash:w:.../SfeTest.cpp.hex:i
I get the output:
