Rainfall Data Modelling Portal - Summary
This project is not part of the GNU Project.
From here it is hoped that access to lots of freely available meteorological data sites will be gained, which transcends the differences in the nature of the data, their representation, and archive access methods.
This facility aims for
ease of use simple point-and-click web interface, simple
explanations of all concepts, relatively straight-
forward interface for programmers to extend the
system.
uniformity all data from all sources, whether they be real or
simulated, are presented in exactly the same
format; all models and statistical analyses are
written to the same interface.
efficient models and analysis
so that extended Monte-Carlo type modelling can be
performed.
open architecture anybody can contribute data sources, models,
analytical routines in any language, operating
system, and licence terms; there are no dark
corners, all parts of the system are
clearly explained.
The technologies used to achieve this are
HTML / HTTP the world wide web by any other name.
CORBA language and machine independent network objects.
XML language and machine independent ASCII structured
information interchange format.
The primary aim of this project is to enhance the development and deployment of meteorological models. Thus it is aimed towards climatological researchers who need to construct models which can interact with each other, which work with the largest selection of collected data possible for good calibration, and which are easy for other people to use; they need to provide their output in the same form as historical data. Additionally, the project may also appeal to observers of the atmosphere as a means of disseminating their data in a way which will increase the potential for its use, or even as a secondary archive for the data.
