I use Linux red hat 8 with the same problem.

i got plex86-20021117. I cant compile with
--enable-ne2000 because first eth_fbsd.cc like to
#inclide ne2k
#inclide eth.h
changing i to u dont compile better:
...
ne2k.h:202: `bx_devices_c' was not declared in this
scope
...
 so i removed --enable-ne2000. So i'm using :
./configure --enable-cdrom --enable-sb16=linux
--with-x \
  --with-linux-source=/usr/src/linux --with-gui=x

Next i like to install win98 but during copy files of
MS Setup the process is killed suddenly. So i decided
to copy win98 directory via xcopy but same problem
occours after some time. Copying is extrem slow one
CAB file needs a few minutes. I limited the memory of
the VM to 32 MB, but plex86 uses up to 550MB Memory
and abot 300MB RSS. As config file i tryed the samples
in the conf dir. I've had a look at bocs 2.0 also
(configuration hints).

I'm using an Athlon XP 1800+ with 512MB RAM, Matrox
MGA G400 AGP, SCSI & IDE HD
gcc 3.2
Kernel 2.4.20
