On further thought, we have a pointer from https://www.gnu.org/savannah-checkouts/gnu/autoconf/manual/autoconf-2.69/html_node/Pointers.html#Pointers to the automake manual as a whole, and these are both manuals where you really have to read the entire dang thing before you can do much of anything with the software, so I think it's good enough for now.

This is still a desirable patch to have.  We'll see if we can find the time to write one before 2.70.

 | Not quite the autoconf manual, but a very good introduction of all
 | three autotools (autoconf, automake, and libtool) can be found in
 | the automake manual:
 |
 | http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/manual/automake.html#Autotools-Introduction

Thanks for the link!

 | Rather than duplicate the efforts, maybe it is easier to just add a
 | link in the autoconf manual to that chapter in the automake manual.

Yes, that should be sufficient.

 | Would you care to try your hand at submitting a patch?

Sorry, no -- I'm struggling to keep up with the software I maintain.

The bison manual has 5 examples.

The AutoConf documentation is over 1 MB long.  The table of contents doesn't seem to contain any simple or basic examples.

So large a reading task is a barrier to use.  Also, I never start from a blank page.  Is there a "hello world" for AutoConf?
