Please advise me how I might obtain the version or release number of my installation. In addition, how do I identify which release of Debian my installation of gNewSense encorporates?

The file /etc/issue contains the name and version of the distribution. gNewSense 3.1 still says 3.0, but that doesn't matter much. The Debian version on which it's based is not obvious in the distribution itself. The wiki page that lists the differences with Debian [1] does say that gNewSense 3 is based on Debian Squeeze.
Does that answer your question?
