A common usage in English is something like "the frog(s) went home", meaning we don't know if it's one or many frogs.

Oops. I didn't even know this support forum existed. I only knew about the bug tracker.
Personally, I think that usage is somewhat informal. Moreover, allowing it would hide problems like typing f(s) outside of math mode which is what the warning is supposed to catch. So for that reason I would rather not change the way it works now.
I think this is the perfect case for turning off the warning in your chktexrc if you aren't worried about the f(s) case, or using a line suppression if you are: The line
the frog(s) went home % chktex 36
will not print an error.
