It would be something nice to have. The advantage of overriding the usersfile would be that any existing applications could use it, by replacing a file with a URL. A more generic API could introduced from advanced options if needed, but the generality of the usersfile allows for extensions as is.

Hi Nikos.  Is this suggestion still relevant?  I like that functionality, but the usersfile stuff is a bit of a gross hack.  Perhaps there is need for more generic APIs here that can deal with any kind of backend (file, HSM, etc).

I've recently modified the openconnect VPN server to use liboath for one time passwords. Having seen however various HSMs like YubiHSM and oath_authenticate_usersfile(), it seems straightforward to extend the oath_authenticate_usersfile() to support HSMs. The API is high level allowing to specify a userfile (which could be a URL similarly to PKCS #11 URLs), and thus could accommodate for more than just files.

That would greatly extend the value of this library for server applications.
