Upon further investigation of the smfi_register() function error on Solaris 10, I found that spamass-milter 0.3.1 smfi_register version checking function calls are compatible with the Sendmail version 8.13.x header files and libmilter library  not version 8.14.x.

Workaround
+++++++++.

First compile and install Sendmail 8.13.8 with libmilter support.

Next compile and install Spamass-milter 0.3.1 using Sendmail 8.13.8 headers and libmilter library.

Final step upgrade to Sendmail version 8.14.1

This means that the headers and milter library you used to compile sendmail aren't the same as the ones you used to compile SpamAssassin and spamass-milter.

Simply recompile all 3 software components using your current version of gcc compiler and library..

FreeBSD 6.2.
Sendmail 8.14.1 + Cyrus-imap 2.3.8 + ClamAV 0.91. Everything is working.
I've tried to build and start spamass-milter-0.3.1_3 from package (using package p5-Mail-SpamAssassin-3.2.1_1). Installation shows no errors.
Spamd daemon started successfully.
And during spamass-milter start there is a line in log file:
"spamasssassin: smfi_register: version mismatch application 16777216 != milter: 2". No socket "/var/run/spamass-milter.sock" created and Spamassassin filtering doesn't work.
