Thank you so much for your reply! Now I had a look into cadaver, and it duplicates the files instantly on the server!

Sorry, no.

The WebDAV protocal has a COPY method wich allows to trigger a copy action on the server without downloading and uploading. But the Unix file system interface has no such command. If you use the cp-program the original file is read and the contents is then written to the newly created file.

Because davfs2 is a file system it is limited to what the local file system interface enables; it has to read the original file and to write the contents to the new file.

Please note: davfs2 is not the best way to use WebDAV. It's intention is to make WebDAV resources accessible to applications without built-in WebDAV support. Because the file system interface and the WebDAV protocol do ot really match there are necessarily limitations in this.

Most ways to use davfs2 for backups have serious drawbacks because of this. They are slow or even unreliable. To use WebDAV for backups it would be the best to build WebDAV support into the backup program.

Hello, Werner!

Yesterday I tested creating duplicates of files on the server with cp, and noticed that the files are first downloaded and then uploaded again under the different name.

I can't really tell if this concerns davfs2 or if it is the design of cp, but do you know of any way to duplicate files on the server without downloading+uploading them? I'm doing backups with duplicity and am worried that if any of the files get corrupted on the server, the whole backup becomes useless, so I'd like to do "backups of my backups"!

Thank you for your attention!
