A : BIOS 0106 does not include the suspend function (S3,S4) because Aureal audio driver is unable to support it. Please note that CPU doze mode and Local standby (HDD, LCD standby mode) can still work.


ADVANCED FEATURES
Q : How to install audio && modem driver on Windows 2000?

A: This Win2K build (any latest win2K build for that matter) comes with an installed Aureal vortex WDM driver. For proper operation, you need to uninstall the existing WDM driver from the O/S and install the update.

Before installation, set the folder options to show all hidden folders. You can set it from file manager -> Folder option -> View-> enable "show all hidden folders".

1. Uninstall

   1. Uninstall the Multifunction adapters -> "Vortex Multifunction PCI Parent" You can uninstall the adapter from Win2000's Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Multifunction adapter -> Vortex Multifunction PCI Parent.
   2. Delete the following files, please go to C:\winnt\inf directory
      "Wdma_aur.inf"
      "wdma_aur.pnf",
      "Adm_mult.inf",
      &quto;Adm_mult.pnf",
      &quto;Adm_port.inf",
      "Adm_port.pnf".
   3. Rename the 'driver.cab' file to be 'driver.cat' from c:\winnt\driver cache\i386 directory.
   4. Delete the 'Adm8810.sys' 'Admjoy.sys' two files from c:\winnt\system32\dllcache directory.
   5. Delete the 'Adm8810.sys' 'Admjoy.sys' two files from c:\winnt\system32\drivers directory.
   6. You will see the "Windows File Protection" message pop up. Please click [cancel] button and then [yes] button to remove the driver.
   7. Reboot.

2. Install

   1. After reboot the notebook, window 2000 will auto detect the Multifunciton adapter.
   2. Follow the installation.
   3. In the middle of the installation, it will ask the following files:

      "ksuser.dll", "ks*.dll", "portcls.sys", "*.drv", and "aurealgm.arl"

      Ksuser.dll -> c:\winnt\system32
      ks*.dll -> c:\winnt\system32\drivers
      *.drv -> c:\winnt\system32
      portcls.sys ->c:\winnt\system32\drivers
      Aurealgm.arl ->'the driver location'.
      Adm8810.sys ->'the driver location'
      Amdjoy.sys ->'the driver location'

   4. Finish the installation and Reboot.

Your au8810 is Vortex Advantage which do not has SPDIF, the black 4-pin socket is Analog CD-IN.

What are the usage of those 16 bytes I/O ports ?

Are these used as SB leagcy ports or Modem ports ?

There is a known bug (sound playing fast) for au88x0 in alsa-driver-1.0.4

You should update your kernel to 2.6.7-rc2 if you are using kernel 2.6.5 / 2.6.6

For those using alsa-driver-1.0.4 and kernel 2.4.x, you should upgrade to alsa-driver-1.0.5

It look like you have also installed alsa oss emulation.

There is no need to install oss emulation unless you have an application which do not support alsa. Most applications such as xmms, mplayer, gxine have native alsa support. you just need to configure those multimedia applications to use alsa instead of oss.

au8810/au8830 has 10 bands hardware equalizer, you will need to use alsamixer to enable/bypass hardware EQ and change the gain of 10 controls of hardware EQ since those oss mixer cannot control the Vortex hardware EQ.

The Vortex hardware EQ is much better than the software EQ of xmms.

You will notice that the optional true line level out (ac97 register 04) may not appear in alsamixer. It depends on whether bit4 of reset (ac97 register 0) is on or off.

ac97_codec.c will create a headphone control for ac97 register 04 if it is on,

If bit4 is off, you will not able to unmute it by alsamixer since there is no patch for stac9704 in ac97_patch.c to create this LNLVL_OUT control

For those who still cannot get any sound from your au8810, please check which codec is used by your au8810 using "cat /proc/asound/au8810/codec97#0/ac97#0-0" and values of ac97 registers using "cat /proc/asound/au8810/codec97#0/ac97#0-0+regs"

It seem that the adb routes table is not cleaned up after you use some alsa applications to play music. (e.g. XMMS)

They call snd_pcm_open() once at the start of the program.

They call snd_pcm_hw_params_alloca() and set up the hardware parameters such as channels,rate,format,period size,buffer size using snd_pcm_hw_params(), snd_pcm_sw_params() before they call snd_pcm_prepare() to play each song from play list.

However they never call snd_pcm_hw_free() and they just call snd_pcm_close() before they exit.


snd_vortex_pcm_hw_params() can free adb routes of previous song and allocate new adb routes when they play next song.

snd_vortex_pcm_hw_free() is never invoked since some alsa applications never call snd_pcm_hw_free()

This means some adb routes are not removed.

I think snd_vortex_pcm_close() should do error recovery for this issue before it close the substream when invoked by snd_pcm_close().

You also need alsa-utils in addition to alsa-driver and alsa-lib

Some kernel 2.6.x distrubtion do not has alsa-utils. Use alsamixer instead of oss mixer to change volume.

All volume are muted by default at bootup, alsamixer allow you to change setting but it don't save setting.

You need to use alsactl to save mixer setting before shutdown and restore the setting after boot-up.


You must recompile the kernel 2.6.x after the patch

Althought ac97_codec.c has CONFIG_PM, but au88x0 driver do not support power managment. you will need to disable power management ACPI in your bios or kernel.

It seem that au8810 and nVidia TNT2 share IRQ 11.

It strange that your au8810 have D2+,D3hot+ since au88x0 driver do not support power management ( I have not seen any code for power suspend/resume )?

It you cannot get sound only from XMMS,
this is because the XMMS use set_buffer_time_near() and set_period_time_near() which may not obtain a workable period size for certian combination of buffer time and period time ( au88x0 require the period size must be a power of 2).

XMMS cannot play mono sound mono U8 8000Hz/11025Hz wav file on my au8830.

* WARNING *: alsa_setup(): Set buffer time failed: Invalid argument.

You must re-compile xmms alsa plugin using the version of alsa-lib which match the version of alsa-driver.

Have you try other application such as aplay, mplayer, gxine alsaplayer ?

The other au8810 such as Advantage, V512, asus lp8400b do not have spdif

I am another individual who is experiencing this problem, and there's been a lot of discussion, but no real clear answer.  My XMMS and alsa-lib are current, using 2.6.5 release, and not getting any au8810 sound.  What's the status on this now?

You have to select default or hw:0,0 as audio device in xmms-alas output plugin.

The specturm analyser of xmms appear to be "working" but there will be no sound from speaker if you select wt hw:0.2 or a3d hw:0,3

There will be no sound if you enable Hardware Equalizer and the scale of 10-bands Equalizers is set to zero in alsamixer or amixer.

You can disable Hardware Equalizer (Pass through) or set the scale of 10-bands Equalizer to middle.

Are you using ALSA or OSS as output plugin in xmms ?

ALSA OSS emulation seem to be disabled on Kernel 2.6

You need to use aplay (alsa-utils) to play .wav sound and arecord to record sound from mic.

Do your au8810 has a quad codec ?
Please post the result of "cat /proc/asound/au8810/codec97#0/ac97#0-0" and "cat /proc/asound/au8810/codec97#0/ac97#0-0+regs".

I notice the alsa driver try to output the sound to both AC97 codec and SDPIF out at the same time for au8810 and au8830. ( Please check the volume of mixer in and mixer output value. )

Refer to the mailing list, Philipp can use the alsa-driver version of aureal driver on his asus notebook (onboard au8810) but also fail to use the alsa-kernel version of aureal driver (The alsa-kernel version has experimental support for wavetable)

I applied the two patches you had mentioned & recompiled the kernel. Checked the mixer settings - mute & volume (un-muted & increased the volume), but I still don't hear the sound. I don't get any error messages when I play a sound file in XMMS, I even see the "sprectrum analyzer" work. Could this be a problem with the card itself (the connectors that I use to connect to the speaker). I cannot think of anything else. The only problem I see is the error message at system bootup - vortex: IRQ reg error.

If there isn't anything else for me to try I will go ahead and buy a new card.

You have to increase the master volume and pcm volume after  you unmute the mixer in alsamixer.

You need to fix those bug described in the patch

Please post the result of you Media Controller (Class 0401) using "lspci -vn".

You will also need VIA workaround patch if your motherboard is using VIA chipset ?

I downloaded the latest source, compiled and tried again (as per the comments below). I still can't hear the sound. The only difference from before was that the message "<3>bad adb fifo reset" is now gone. Here is what I see now:

Vortex: init.... <6>done.
vortex: revision = 0x2, device = 3
vortex: Erratum workaround enabled.
vortex: IRQ reg error

What other checks can I perform to see what the problem is? I can give you any other information if you need. Please help! Thanks.
