I assume you installed one of the brscan packages from the Brother website. Maybe it only works as root initially. Have you done this too: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1c.html#d6 ?

(Lowering priority because it concerns software that's not in gNewSense.)

I have a Brother MFC-7260N multifunction device (laser printer, scanner, and fax).  Brother provides guidance on installing the printer and scanner drivers.  Installing the printer driver worked, but although the scanner driver completed, none of the scanning programs I have could get the scanning function to work:

    - XSANE says "Failed to open device `brother4:bus;dev1':  Invalid Argument"

    - SimpleScan says "Unable to connect to scanner"

    - Scanlite says "Opening the selected scanner failed."

I have the same problem with the Brother DCP-J140W deskjet, but don't bother about that one, because I haven't done any investigation.

Any advice?

Paul
