"Am I doing it wrong?"

Yes.
You use mount option username. This option is for use with pam-mount only. Don't use it for anything else.
Please read "man mount.davfs":
OPTIONS
  username
as well as EXAMPLES

Store the username in ~/.davfs2/secrets. If you want you may store the password there too (this file is only readable by the user).

I have reasigned this to the support tracker because it isn't a bug.

If you got the idea of using option username from some webpage you should inform them that they are wrong. You may also prefer to read the original documentation.

[field #14]      Original Submission: hi folks,
I'm running davfs2 version 1.5.4 on gentoo x64. In particular, I want to use it with https://dav.box.com/dav. I have an fstab entry:

https://dav.box.com/dav somedir davfs noauto,user,username= 0 0

but when I try to mount somedir as my user and mount.davfs asks me for a password, the password is echoed in plaintext on the console. Am I doing it wrong?

cheers
