Without the --redirect, you should see the output in the message board below the canvas. If you don't see it, maybe the board has collapsed to zero vertical size? Especially if you use the Python console at the bottom of the GUI and increase its size, it is possible to completely obscure the message board.
There is a handle to increase its size and make it visible again.

Got it - you should open through the command window with 'pyformex --redirect'

I'm trying to modify an example script, and when I make a change the script doesn't run, but I can't see the python error. Similarly, if I print('Hello'), the script runs but I don't know where Hello is printed.

Where can I see feedback information?
