I suggest that this might be even more useful if the reject message contained the queue id of the message. In case of a false positive, that would make it much easier to grep for why it was rejected.

Duh. I can't believe this patch has not been integrated. it's over 4 years old, and a much-needed feature. Bad maintainership!

I just implemented this myself, not knowing that there is already a patch for it. It can take the string from either env var (added after being inspired by the patch here) or from a commandline arg. Only problem is that I don't know how to pass long strings with spaces so that getopt will accept them as one option - usually, that's "", but that didn't work.

Changelog for version custom-reject-3.patch:

  • Version custom-reject-2.patch produced a segfault when no env

variable was found. This is fixed in the new version.
Thanks to John Hill for reporting this bug to me!

  • spamass-milter now writes a short note to the logs when it

could not find the environment variable.
("REJECT_MESSAGE not set; using default" or
"reject message (env) not set; using default")

On Debian systems simply add a line like
REJECT_MESSAGE="my custom reject with url"
to /etc/default/spamass-milter and it will be used. You might as well use a special variable and specify it with -C.

On other distributions there may be other mechanisms. If everything else fails: simply add a line like:
export REJECT_MESSAGE="my custom reject with url"
in spamass-milters' startup item.

I cleaned up my patch (ie removed the nasty //ADI comments) and added a "-C" option to allow the user/admin to specify an environment variable containing the string to use as reject comment...
And, most important: credits go to Gerd Hesina for helping me with this!! Thank you very much!

As I need a configurable reject message (I want to redirect false positives to a URL), I made the attached changes to spamass-milter (see patchfile).
simply do

export REJECT_MESSAGE="No spam here! (see http://mycompany.com/spam for details)"

to give those who were (erroneously) caught by my spamfilter a way how to reach me.
Then you only have to start spamass-milter with the newly introduced "-c" option...

best regards,
Adi Kriegisch (adi@vrvis.at)

PS: I thought about using a config file for this but I decided that this does not fit to the concept of spamass-milter as it is now.
PPS: maybe its a good idea to do a "-C" option where one can specify the name of the environment variable as well... (so noone is forced to use REJECT_MESSAGE).
