Thanks Karl!

I will make the necessary fixes first, and then upload an svndump.

What about old release tarballs? Can I put these on Savannah for download?

Hi Benedict,

Glad you're ok with the changes in general.

It is best to use the standard GPL notice for the HTML files.  Using other words just invites confusion.  Since the notice can/should be an HTML comment, it doesn't affect readers anyway.

Moving ahead: we can import an svn repo, in fact, that is preferred.  Can you make these changes in your berlios svn first? Then make a dump to be imported, as explained at http://savannah.gnu.org/maintenance/SvnImportExistingRepo.

I'm approving the savannah project now so you can start to get things ready.

Thanks,
Karl

Hi Karl, Thanks for looking at my project.

1) These are indeed oversights: no problem to change to GNU/Linux. Even the "Bumpix Live Linux". It is my system, a customization of Debian GNU/Linux, and the user gets to see GNU/Linux on the startup screen. So the name is really a misnomer and I'll change it.

2) Source files for the documentation can easily get the license statement. Generated HTML: I guess it should be possible by including it in the template. Do you sugggest to add the full licensing clause there as well?

For scripts/* we can add the licensing too. Some of these scripts however are meant to show up in the tutorial, and I may opt for a shorter formulation there so as to not distract the first time user.
A README might then specify the longer statement, just as for images.

3) How do we continue from here? Should I prepare and upload a fixed .tar.gz?
I hope that if the project gets approved, I can transfer the whole SVN repository to Savannah, so as to not lose the history. The repository contains some more files that are not in the .tar.gz distribution: source files for generating our web site, for generating the documentation, some developer and administrative tools. I will already check these too for consisting GNU/Linux naming and license statements.

Hi Benedict -- looking at the .tar.gz, I just have a couple of comments:

1) install.txt, config.txt, and bumpix.txt all use "Linux" in some places to refer to the GNU/Linux system.  I see "GNU/Linux" in other places, so I'm guessing/hoping these are just oversights.  Can you change those?

I realize the name of bumpix is, unfortunately, "Bumpix Live Linux" (is that your system?), so it wouldn't make sense to change that, but there could at least be a caveat about the misnomer.

2) missing license statements.  It is best for each file greater than a dozen lines or so have an explicit license statement.

In the case of the individual documentation files (both original source and generated HTML), hopefully you can add the GPL notice as a comment somehow.

In the case of the scripts/* files, I know they are short, but since they are code of a sort, I think it would be clearest to have a README in that directory specifying a license for them too.

In the case of the images, an accompanying README stating the license is best.

Similarly for any other files I missed ...

Best wishes,
Karl

Thanks for the quick response.
I can certainly wait a couple of days more :)

Hi Benedict -- thanks for wanting to be at Savannah.  Sorry for the delay -- we have a near-total lack of volunteers at the moment.  I hope someone will be able to review your registration soon, or I will try to look within a couple more days.

All the best,
Karl

It is now one month since I submitted my project and I have not received any reaction yet. Since I have no idea how much longer the approval procedure may take (the promised date has been passed for three weeks) and there is a lot of migration work to be done before the end of the year (when Berlios will shut down),
I may have to start looking for alternative hosting facilities.
I can not risk losing seven years of development work.

However, if the project gets approved while I'm still in the search for an alternative, I will choose Savannah, as I definitely prefer to have my project hosted here.

Any idea when the approval procedure will be finished?

Registration Details

  • Name: pyFormex
  • System Name:  pyformex
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License v3 or later

Description:

pyFormex is a program for generating, transforming and manipulating large geometrical models of 3D structures by sequences of mathematical operations. Thanks to a powerful (Python based) scripting language, pyFormex is very well suited for the automated design of spatial structures. It provides a wide range of operations on surface meshes, like STL type triangulated surfaces. There are provisions to import medical scan images. pyFormex can also be used as a pre- and post-processor for Finite Element analysis programs. Finally, it might be used just for creating some nice graphics. Because the geometrical models are built from a script, automation and creation of parametrized models is a natural thing in pyFormex.

Other Software Required:

Python: PSF  http://docs.python.org/license.html
NumPy: BSD  http://numpy.scipy.org/license.html#license
OpenGL: http://www.opengl.org/about/licensing/
PyOpenGL: BSD http://pypi.python.org/pypi/PyOpenGL/3.0.2a1
Qt: GPL http://qt.nokia.com/products/licensing/
PyQt: GPL http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/software/pyqt/license

Other Comments:

pyFormex is currently hosted on berlios.de (http://pyformex.berlios.de)
BerliOS will however shut down by the end of this year, so we want to move to Savannah as the principal repository.

The repository currently contains some media files with unspecified origin and license. Most of them are our own original work and free to use. A few files with unknown origin are not essential and may be removed.
