Can we prepare it for inclusion in debian? Till it has a stable release we can use the experimental repository.

Santhosh, what do you say?

Dhvani 0.9 beta version is available in sourceforge.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dhvani

  • There was an architecture rewrite and it is a single binary now.
  • Automatic Language detection has been added so that it can read a text even if a single sentence contains Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi words.
  • Some bugs has been fixed and some added :)
  • Users can save the speech file now.

To compile

./configure
make
sudo make install

Note that it is in beta stage and please report any bugs you find to santhosh00 at gmail.com

Happy Hacking!!!

It has been 75 days since Dhvani Malayalam http://fci.wikia.com/wiki/Dhvaniis released for public in Sourceforge https://sourceforge.net/projects/dhvani/. So far 156 downloads happened. Nobody reported any bugs :-(. why?!!

There are still more items in the TO-DO list.

1) Code Clean up (workable code -> readable+workable code)
2) Integration with text editors(gedit/kate)
3) Integration with KTTS. Need to contact KTTS developers for this
4) Packaging: Configure script, install script , debian packaging etc
5) Adding more command line options for better usability.
6) Support for more languages.

Things might get delayed due to my time constraints.
Anybody wanna help?!

Dhvani malayalam Text to speech system status(21-Jan-2007):

  • Added support for English letters(for eg: if SMC is coming in the malayalam text it will read it as ess em see)
  • Added support for  % @ $ = symbols
  • Tuning continues..
  • Fixed warnings in compilation of phonetic to speech conversion engine.

GUI programming stopped until possible pronunciation tunings are done.
"tta" (as in mattam, kuttam, kaattati) pronounciation is still "ra ra"

Dhvani malayalam Text to speech system status(15-Jan-2007):

  • Sound system completely transformed to ALSA(device multiplexing is possible now.)
  • Removed the limitation on the input file size
  • Corrected the pronounciation of rh, nya, nga, etc
  • Number reading logic modified- Upto o crore(still only 9 place number can be read). Handled may exceptonal cases like pathinaayiram, thonnorayiram, thollayiram. irunooru etc..
  • Dashamsham support added for numbers
  • An initail frontend is developed in QT(screenshots at http://picasaweb.google.com/santhosh00/DhvaniGUI ).

TODO:

  • Optimization for koottaksharams, correction of Ra and ra(There is a limitation on the sound database for this)
  • Webpage reading logic
  • Some code optimization(mainly temp file usage reduction.)
  • Testing and bug fixing :-)

Ideas and suggestions are invited for possible front ends and various applications which can use this TTS as back end.
Still I am trying to get the CVS access at sourceforge..

Lets use the upstream site http://sourceforge.net/projects/dhvani/ for malayalam support. Ask for commit access and put the files in cvs there so that every one can test.
