Hi!

I have deleted your project :) Do you really want to delete your account? I think that having Savannah account would come in handy sometime. Also, you are welcome to host there your future projects :)

Thank you,
Tomasz

Hello guys,
Everything went fine with this test project. I passed the practice thanks to your help and support.

Sorry for the delay, but I was just looking how to remove the project from Savannah. I think I can only remove myself from the project. Therefore, I would request your help again.

As soon as I get an answer, I would proceed to delete my account.

Thank you everybody for your attention, it was great to create a project with you! Hopefully we will meet in the future in another project.

Best regards,

Carlos

Hello everybody,

Aljosha, thank you very much for approving my project.

Regarding to the document, although already had a copyright notice in spanish, I added the english version at the top, with the hyperlink to the full copy of the FDL.

I tried to upload it with cvs (it was my first time working with a real repository), I also practiced my security knowledge and I finally succeed.

Maybe my teacher would be interested in looking the project record and the repository, I promise to erase everything within next week.

Thank you very much for your collaboration, now I know where can I host a future real project!

Best regards,

Carlos

Hi Carlos,

I have approved your project.  You will receive an automated e-mail containing detailed information about the approval.

As for the files you uploaded: They need a license header and copyright notice. This may sound picky but is necessary to avoid legal issues. I recommend you https://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl-howto.html on this subject. Please include the notice before you upload any data. There is also a site https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html for GPL covered work.

Have fun with Savannah and thanks again for choosing Savannah for your exercise :)

Regards.

Hello Tomasz,

Of course, in my latter comment I said the project would be released under the GPLv3, but we do not have any code since this project is a university exercise.

I also attached a piece of documentation (sgml, it is written in spanish) protected by the FDL. Is it enough to host this test project?

As soon as I get out the information I need for my lectures, I will close the project and delete the account; hopefully I will start a real project in the future :)

Thank you in advance.

Carlos

Hi!

I have nothing additional to say. All projects hosted on Savannah need not to advertise open source movement and must be released under terms of free software license.

Carlos, it's great that you decided to host your project here :) You need to provide us skeleton tarball, it doesn't have to be doing something useful, we only review your code from legal side of things.

Regards,
Tomasz

PS. Aljosha, you are doing great job reviewing submission :)

Dear Aljosha,

I completely agree with you, but it was only a phylosophy discussion, nothing to do with our case study project. Of course we can choose a license to this project, in my case I have chosen de GPL v3, and we can go together with the FDF free software definition.

We have no source, but this practice also consisted of generating a bit of documentation in SGML licensed under the FDL (I am attaching it, sorry about the language, everything is in catalan); remember, everything its fictitious. Maybe you can accept my proposal creating a project only for this documentation?

Since our lectures were taken with the sourceforge example, we have been explicitly encouraged to create a project in a different community.

Yours sincerely,

Carlos

Hi again,

I understand your point of view. However, Savannah is a place for development of Free Software not Open Source and we are keen behind this requirement. This rule was not made to discriminate certain projects; it would rather seem funny that we at Savannah, which belongs to GNU, which belongs to the FSF would suddenly accept Open Source projects, thus leaving a good portion of our philosophy behind. The reason why I am discussing with you is not of technical problems but of ethical problems: That is that Open Source cuts all philosophy, which the FSF and we at Savannah find important for a nice society.
Therefore, maybe there are better places to deploy your project, e.g. Sourceforge promotes Open Source. I do not want to appear as an evil dictator though, so I'm giving you room to discuss things further.

I'm also adding xenu and mjflick to the CC list, since I'm rather new as a reviewer. Maybe you guys have something else important to say on this issue?

Best regards.

Dear Aljosha,

First of all, thank you very much for answering so quickly.

Regarding to the source code URL, I have not included any URL simply because we have no source code. This MSc subject is about Free Software Engineering, and is mainly focused on engineering rather than developing. Therefore, we have UML diagrams, community studies, cost studies and so on, but nothing to do with code.

As regards to the open source issue, I used this terminology, since I have studied both movements and we know the details of them. Students are encouraged to focus from the FSF point of view, but sometimes (mostly when a company is behind certain software) open source is an alternative. This is similar case as this case study project, where a fictitious airline gives its software to the community.

Hopefully you will understand our point of view, and help me to achieve my purpose.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Carlos

Hi Carlos,

thanks for submitting your project to Savannah! All projects on Savannah have to meet certain requirements, also if it is a test. You find all requirements on https://savannah.gnu.org/register/requirements.php.

Therefore please include a (perhaps temporary) URL pointing to the source code. Alternatively, you can forward the code to me by email or attach it to this tracker.

We wish to review your source code, even if it is not functional, to catch potential legal issues early.

For example, to release your program properly under the GNU GPL you must include a copyright notice and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every  copyrightable file, usually any file more than 10 lines long.  This is explained in http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.  Our review would help catch potential omissions such as these.

Note that sending code to our repositories is a release, since the code will then be publicly available through anonymous access.

Please also note that Savannah supports projects of the Free Software movement, not projects of the Open Source movement.

We are careful about ethical issues and insist on producing software that is not dependent on proprietary software.

While Open Source, as defined by its founders, means something pretty close to Free Software, it's frequently misunderstood.  For more information, please see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-software-for-freedom.html.

Regards.
