Hi,

thanks for the help. I just force pushed our master branch and everything is good now.

Thanks again,

nick

Hello,

I'm reviewing old tasks in GNU Savannah.

Is this issue still relevant?

If within two weeks I still do not get a reply, I will assume Bob's response addressed the issue and will close this item.

That From: address has been annoying.  We should change it.  In the mean time it is what it is.

Thank you for the backstory information.  I have opened up the freeon repository.  I believe you should be able to push to now.  I created an oldmaster branch for safety.  I will clean that up afterward.  This should allow you to push your current master.  Please let us know how that goes.

Hi Bob,

sorry, I had replied to the NOREPLY email address, without realizing that this wouldn't work. Here again what I had sent:

sorry for the delay. You are right that we went through a few iterations of CVS -> git. So what happened was that I couldn't figure out how to convert CVS properly to git the first time around (I was new to git), and only much later revisited the issue. By that time we had made lots of commits in git, which meant that I had to graft the git history on top of the converted CVS history, which rewrites all git commit hashes. The only way to push now is to force push, which I am not allowed to do. I migrated the repository to github [1], which is where you can see the whole git history plus the converted CVS history.

I don't want to remove FreeON from savannah, I simply would like to be able to force push once so that I can sync the history with the one that's on github now. FreeON is an OpenScience project and we believe strongly in the goals of the FSF.

Thanks so much for your help,

nick

Hi Nick,  I have assigned the ticket to me so that it will show up in my queue so that it doesn't get lost.  Your original ticket was submitted before I started volunteering.

Whenever someone asks for their project source to be deleted it raises all kinds of waving red flags.  This is why no one wants to deal with removing projects.  It is a toxic item.

For some reason git seems to have 100x the number of requests to remove source code over any other version control system.  Personally I am an advocate for git.  I use it.  I like it.  And so I often handle many of the git related tickets.  But since Savannah is all about software free(dom) it means that I need to check three times that everything is happening above board in a transparent way and people are not trying to suppress published code.  Unfortunately this does happen too often.  And therefore as software source code curators we must be extra diligent when dealing with the topic.

Sometimes people convert from cvs to git and have a few iterations before they get everything converted in a good way.  That is often the case and perfectly reasonable. It might be that this is what you are doing.  I couldn't find any cvs source code for your project so I could not check.  Where is it located?

Please say a few words about the background for your project to get me up to speed about what is happening.  Please say a few words about what it is you did and why you want to have your project removed.  Or why you want to rewrite your project history.  Normally you publish your changesets and once published they are published.  Genies are easy to let out of the bottle but once out they don't like to go back into them.

It's been quite a while since I opened this ticket without any apparent activity. Could someone please take care of this?

I ran 'git filter-branch' because I grafted that branch onto previous history I converted from CVS. This changed all SHA commit tags, and makes it impossible for me to push my master to savannah. Please delete master so that I can push it.

Thanks,

nick
