Hello.
Yes, maybe improve lsb_release is a solution, but I think that lsb
stands for Linux Standard Base so the goals are not the same. They should change their goals to catch all the possible distributions of the world. This are the goals of distroname. It uses lsb_release to reuse the linux standard base distribution detection, but goes more far than linux systems.
I think it can be useful for configuration applications, that depends on the distribution, and need to know it.
But if you think it is not useful to have it on savannah, it isn't a problem to me.

Regards.

Hi,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

In order to release your project properly and unambiguously under the GNU GPL, please place copyright notices and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every copyrightable file, usually any file more than 10 lines long.

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.

The GPL FAQ explains why these procedures must be followed.  To learn why a copy of the GPL must be included with every copy of the code, for example, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhyMustIInclude.

Also, can you explain me some more what the distroname script is doing? Would it make sense to improve lsb_release instead?

If you are willing to make the changes mentioned above, please provide us with an URL to an updated tarball of your project.  Upon review, we will reconsider your project for inclusion in Savannah.

Regards.

While this item will be useful to track the registration process, approving or discarding the registration must be done using the specific Group Administration page, accessible only to site administrators, effectively logged as site administrators (superuser):

Registration Details

  • Name: distroname
  • System Name:  distroname
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License V2 or later

Description:

Output the distribution name of the system.
Seems that lsb_release -d stops on LSB compliant distributions, the names says all. "distroname" will no stop on LSB compliant distributions and will output the distribution name of all the distribution that could output it. To obtain this goal, it will work on demand, some user wants the output of his distribution, test distroname, if it's not found then
the user and the mantainer can have a way to get the distribution name from the system and add it to the code of distroname.

Other Software Required:

lsb-release for lsb-compliant distributions, according to his manual is free software.
