It's been a very long time, so I doubt he is interested in retrieving something from Savannah that he may have uploaded. If the project in the current status is not acceptable, I can't see a reason to not close it. Whatever the reason Tim has not tried to contact to us. So any case it does not bother me anymore to close it.

OK, I'm fixing the GNU->non-GNU already.
If Tim isn't reachable, do you think we should remove the project?

The basic point is, Ubuntu is not free.  gNewSense is free.  If it's not sufficient (and I certainly know it is not sufficient for everyone), then the appropriate response is working to improve it (or another free alternative), not switching to something that promotes nonfree software.

I don't see how updating once in a while is a bad thing for those who have old computers, especially if they have slow connection speeds.

Nicodemo, a standalone translation program doesn't sound any different than any other normal project, but that doesn't sound like what Tim wants to do.

Tim, your desire to create a free software distribution for your country is all to the good and I hope you succeed.  But from the perspective of freedom, you should start with gNewSense instead of Ubuntu (which includes many nonfree packages).  And from the perspective of savannah resources, my understanding is that we can't host an entire distro.

gNewSense is said to be developed in such a way as to make it easy to create different flavors of distros.  I don't have any personal experience with it.

Well, wouldn't you think that it would be easier to write the translations for low resource software from English to Cambodian rather than worrying about all the bugs and whether your project meets resource requirements? From there wouldn't it be easier for all distributions to include the language packs?

Karl, how hard would it be to pass such a project?

I do not think you are the only one in your country trying to remove the dependence on English only software. Here is the KhmerOS project home page.

http://www.khmeros.info/

I don't know how useful you have found them. I believe that project does translations of software and ports it to a distribution, which they seem to be supporting OpenSuse.

Because I want to create a GNU/Linux for my country. Most people of my country using Microsoft Window and non-free software. I want to them back to use Free Software. I distribute an operating system special for my country and easy to use in my country, include font, multimedia and language support. Another GNU/Linux not easy to use in my country. Most people in my country have not internet connection so they can't install multimedia and language support. Most computer of my country is very old hardware so they need an lightweight operating system like my distribution.

This is my old version code name "bopha", :) This old version, I don't know how to create debian repository and package. I create deb package from another deb package, so I have not source code. In this new version all package is have source but some package need rebuild to get source. Some package on my repository have not source because it is import from another site and I can't find the source code but don't worry I'll approve the source code for it.

I forgot to finish my sentence! The source code to the programs that you distribute with your GNU/Linux operating system, I have not found any. Your project seems to distribute linux and lxde as well as other software protected by the GPL, which means that you must distribute the source code to those projects. Where are those? All I have found on your site is a torrent for some iso's.

I have seen tarballs of source code for some of the debs that you distribute, but not all.

As far as I know we do not host full distros on savannah, for all the various reasons that have been discussed here.

I've moved the project into maintenance mode until it's resolved, one way or another.  Sorry for any confusion/hassle.

My belief is that you will have a very hard time supporting this project by yourself. For one it is a tough task keeping up with what the GPL requires, the human readable code of all object code that you distribute covered under the GPL. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe you have provided those on the other site. Yes you provide your code, but not the

My advice is if you want to make an Operating System, support a free GNU/Linux distribution such as http://gnewsense.org . You don't have to distribute an OS yourself for you package to be included somewhere.

If this is a whole distribution, it shouldn't include the original firefox, adobe plugins, kernel blobs, or other nonfree software.  Put another way, it should be derived from gNewSense, not Ubuntu.

What exactly is this project?  If the tarball is 500k, it cannot be a whole distro.  (Which is good, since we can't support those.)
Sorry that I can't check myself right now.

Best,
Karl

I was hoping to get your acknowledgement you will call the operating system is GNU/Linux, which is not how you called it in the description. The operating system as we call it is GNU/Linux, pronouced "GNU plus Linux" or "GNU slash Linux."  It is a huge problem on this site to claim Linux as an Operating System.

>Most of program included in my distribution is free but some of program in distribution is not free like adobe flash plugin, firefox not remove install non-free option, etc...

If Ubuntu supports Adobe and Adobe does not release free software what's the point of supporting either of them with free software? I think that you would have a larger base of users if you went with a distribution that supported the same ideals as this site if you are to register here.

> I want you to change registration details from "Type: Official GNU software" to "Type: non-GNU software & documentation".

I will do that.

I will approve your project, if you accept referencing the free OS as GNU/Linux instead of Linux. Since Linux is only a kernel, this site believes it is not complete without GNU programs. Please, consider the GNewSense GNU/Linux distribution, instead of supporting the Ubuntu GNU/Linux distribution, as GNewSense is fully free and based on Ubuntu's LTS.

In general, there is no problem with a project having some files be GPLv2-or-later, and other files be GPLv3-or-later.  (The -or-later is crucial.)  There can be good reasons for doing this. I'm afraid I didn't have a chance to look at the sources here, but it's not a blocker as far as savannah approval goes.

Best,

I am not sure why you replaced your GPL version 2 with the GPL version 3 in the new tarball, when the GPL version 2 was fine.

Now you have GPL version 2 or later license blocks with the GPL version 3 license. I don't think that will work.

Which license do you wish to have?

> Changelog of debain doesn't need copyright notice.

I guess because it is being packaged up into a deb package and you placed the copyright and license notice in a file called copyright.

What about the CHANGELOG in the top level directory? It is usually missed to place a copyright notice in it, but it is recommended by GNU.

What about the *.form files do they not need a license notice? Are they trivial or derived (generated) from another program?

Thanks.

I downloaded the new tarball and noticed you placed a license in the tarball which had no difference with GPL version 2 license.

There is a problem with your project files if it is to comply with the license and therefore register with this site.

Your copyrightable project files need a copyright notice. I took a look at your gambas code, scripts, and CHANGELOG; they do not have a copyright notice. In code the copyright should be placed near the first possible line you may place comments. In the CHANGELOG you may place your copyright at the end of the file.

It needs to have a valid license notice in each copyrightable file explaining the file is part of the program. None of the files contain this statement. It should be placed after your copyright notice.

Find an example source file that contains a valid copyright and license notice in lines 2 through 20 below [1].

You should say GNU/Linux instead of Linux in any future references to it as an operating system.

Hello, I downloaded and extracted the files of you taball, and I have noticed that the GPL License is missing. Please place a file named COPYING or LICENSE in the root folder of your project with the text from the GPL v2 license [1]. Note that GPL v2 is the old version of the GPL and that a new version of the GPL is available [2].

Your license notice with your copyright should be found in each of your source files your project. Additional on this issue can be found at the Savannah Wiki page [3].
