Hi Mike -- sorry for the delay.  I approved the project.
(Nicodemo, thanks for the review, as always.)

The cron jobs should complete the setup within another couple of hours.

Happy hacking,
Karl

Not intending to be rude, but have the administrators put much thought into this for the last four days?  I'd love to hear some news.

I contacted Simon about wadinfo-builder.pl, and he agreed to relicensing it under the modified BSD license the rest of the project is in.  This is fixed in my git repository.

PLAYPAL is the palette used by Doom engine games and is included in the WAD files (http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/PLAYPAL); it is there to generate a palette dynamically for Freedoom.  If the license is a problem, I could most likely get the license changed, or rewrite code to generate the palette from scratch if necessary.  However, only its output is genuinely used by Freedoom, and the output is not covered by the GNU GPL; I believe there's an article on GNU.org about that issue, but I cannot find it.

I noticed a dependency I had not noticed before.  It depends on ImageMagick (or compatible), which is licensed under a custom license they proclaim is GPL-compatible: http://www.imagemagick.org/script/license.php

Pbmplus has a custom license which DeuTex borrows from.  It seems to be basically the X11 License without the warranty disclaimer: http://www.acme.com/software/pbmplus/

The author of MAP31 is thanking a whole bunch of projects that are really irrelevant to the building of the map itself (Duke3D, Build engine, GCC, DJGPP, MS-DOS, (GNU/)Linux, Windows?  Why?).  These maps are likely to be entirely replaced as things are currently being planned anyhow...

Yes, I think you guys are right about the Modified BSD license. I misinterpreted what they meant by removal of the advertising clause.

I did find such a 4-clause license in lumps/genmidi/oplvar.h

If the Modified BSD licensed projects files like the scripts do not need a copyright notice and the license notice included, I guess it would be alright. I am on the assumption of the contrary; the copyright and license notice rule still applies with a Modified BSD license.

The only file that has the full license notice and the copyright notice pertaining to the project itself was in

lumps/genmidi/genmidi-gen.c

There is also some files from the PlayPal? project that claims GPL and its folder has an older version of the GPL. That's fine I guess.

I am not sure why Simon Howard placed a comment "Consider this GPL'd". Probably a joke. wadinfo-builder.pl

They have a CREDITS file which lists the contributors and a general thing that they have done. There are also status files but those seem to be mostly for their goals and not dating a copyright.

I believe all the other things are okay. Free Software ethic instead of Open Source. There is a mention of linux instead of GNU/Linux in ./levels/oblivion/map31.txt . I believe he is correct about the dependencies, I took a look at the webpage but did not d/l the their licenses. I don't know what a Pbmplus license is.

This here contains a copy of the original 4-clause license from the University of California: http://cvsweb.netbsd.org/bsdweb.cgi/src/bin/ls/ls.c?rev=1.49&content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markup&only_with_tag=MAIN

This is for reference of the specific license RMS was speaking of in his publication, to demonstrate that it was not the final clause which was an issue, only the third one.

Hi,

The problematic clause in the original BSD is: "All advertising materials mentioning features or use of this software must display the following acknowledgement: This product includes software developed by XXXXX and its contributors."

It was a "requirement to promote", while here it's something like "don't use my name without consent in promotions".

I think the freedoom clause is GPL-compatible.

I disagree that there is a problem.  If you notice that page, the modified BSD license is classified as GPL-compatible, and it is most likely referring to the modification proposed by the following page at GNU.org: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/bsd.html

The article deals with only removing the advertisement clause of the BSD license, not the non-endorsement/promotion clause which is part of the original BSD license.

However, if there is a real problem, it is fairly easy to contact the original Freedoom developers to see if a negotiation can be worked out.  :)

I believe that we cannot accept this project because it contains a restrictive clause that is incompatible with the GPL.

Below is the clause I see in your modified BSD license.

  * Neither the name of the freedoom project nor the names of its
contributors may be used to endorse or promote products derived
from this software without specific prior written permission.

See the Various Licenses article below:

Registration Details

  • Name: Freedoom
  • System Name:  freedoom
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: Modified BSD License

Description:

Freedoom is a project to create a completely free game data IWAD for id Software's Doom engine.  While the Doom source code was released under the GNU GPL v2 in 1999, the game data is not free.  Freedoom aims to recreate game data from scratch, using no resources of the original game, and license it under a free license so that everyone can benefit from the work.  Combined with the game engine, this results in a 100% Free Software game.

Other Software Required:

DeuTex for building: http://www.teaser.fr/~amajorel/deutex/
Tri-licensed under the GNU LGPL, GNU GPL, and pbmplus licenses.
Boom-compatible engine for playing, licensed under the GNU GPL v2: http://www.teamtnt.com/boompubl/getit.htm
The most popular engine for playing Freedoom is PrBoom, also licensed under the GNU GPL v2: http://prboom.sourceforge.net/

Other Comments:

I'm actually the new maintainer of Freedoom, and for various reasons I want it to switch to using git as a version control, on top of the fact that the original project is hosted on SourceForge (http://freedoom.sourceforge.net) which I tend to avoid (using a development platform) as much as possible for ethical reasons, so Savannah seems to be a very good choice.
