could be a nice symbol for replacing unknown chars. XChat is using it too. But since it's Unicode char, and WeeChat user might not use Unicode, there should be a configuration variable for changing it.

From GNOME Character Map:

>
> General Character Properties
> In Unicode since: 1.1
> Unicode category: Symbol, Other
> Various Useful Representations
> UTF-8: 0xEF 0xBF 0xBD
> UTF-16: 0xFFFD
> C octal escaped UTF-8: \357\277\275
> XML decimal entity:
> Annotations and Cross References
> Notes:
> • used to replace an incoming character whose value is unknown > or unrepresentable in Unicode
> • compare the use of U+001A <control> as a control character
> to indicate the substitute function

The latest time when I asked about this on IRC:

15:36:40 Mkaysi | I am having a problem with charsets. I don't know is another party replacing all Ä and Ö letters with ?,
| because ? is used as unknown character replacer in WeeChat.
