Did you apply a patchpack with running autoconf in config/?

make tries to run configure for "make clean" (and "make distclean") targets since it considers config/Makefile.config to be too old.

thats moderately bad if the reason for running the cleaner is that configure fails because of old crud (like an old ocaml version) in the buildtree.
