I don't understand what's being requested here; monotone's behavior is just like subversion's and cvs's here (in fact, monotone's is even simpler, since you don't have to say "add foo/" before saying "add foo/bar.txt").

Original submitter hasn't clarified after some months; closing until they clarify their request...

Actually, if you do 'monotone add <dir>', it will add the directory itself and all of its contents. And you can do 'cd <dir> ; monotone add <file>' too, assuming that <dir> is already part of the repository. Is that what you were looking for?

I don't see how Monotone's behaviour differs from CVS/Subversion (don't know Perforce) in this regard. Care to elaborate?

I use numerous source control systems regularly (Perforce, Subversion, CVS, and now, Monotone). One unique behavior of Monotone is that it requires (AFAICT) that a file be explicitly added to a directory, e.g.,

monotone add foo/bar.txt

is required to add a file to the foo/ directory. A major usability improvement (which would also make add consistent with other systems) would be for monotone to detect the directory in which the file already exists, and transparently add the file.
