I finaly found why it work for me and not for you while we have the same version of growisofs (5.21 too, 5.21.4.10.8 precisely) and almost the same mkisofs (2.01a24).
When TkDVD is launched from a tty and that tty is kept open there's only a warning when you overwrite a DVD+/-RW ("WARNING: /dev/hdc already carries isofs!"). But if this tty is closed before writing there's indeed a fatal error ("FATAL: /dev/hdc already carries isofs!").
Maybe you have changed the way you launch TkDVD? I will solve and release a new version with your patch (-use-the-force-luke=tty is apparently needed since growisofs 3.1 so everybody should have a superior version).
Thank for submitting this bug :)

stupid savannah seems to have lost my password.

anyways, the included patch simply adds "-use-the-force-luke=tty" to all uses of "-Z".

the better way would be to use "-Z" alone, and if growisofs exits with an (particular) error, then prompt the user to insure overwriting is okay, and then retry with "-use-the-force-luke=tty".

plus the output of "growisofs --version" should be tested to see if the version of growisofs is new enough to necessitate the additional argument.

the included patch gets the job done for me.

sorry, this might be helpful as the problem just starting occuring within the last week (as i weekly write backups to dvd), so a new version of growisofs must have entered debian testing during that time.

$ growisofs --version

  • growisofs by <appro@fy.chalmers.se>, version 5.21,

front-ending to mkisofs: mkisofs 2.01a34-unofficial-iconv (i686-pc-linux-gnu)

to keep people from having scripts blindly overwriting an already existing isofs on a dvd+/-rw, scripts must use the additional argument "-use-the-force-luke=tty" otherwise growisofs complains about an already existing isofs and exits without overwriting it.

i have modified my personal copy of tkdvd 2.6 and provide a patch if necessary (just in a hurry right now and don't have the time except to file this report).
