So, which characters should be allowed?

One possibility would be to allow all valid characters in an email address using the dot-atom variant of local-part, not
quoted-string (see RFC 2822). Loosely speaking, that means English characters (A-Z and a-z), digits, dot and these characters:

!#$%&'*+-/=?^_`{|}~
