Look a patch #3851 ('dtostre' speed up). This is another realization this function (preliminary now). Accuracy is 0.5 LSB (not fully tested) with precisions 0..6 (1..7 digits), and 0.58 LSB with precision 7 (8 digits).

This is a difficult beast to handle. Maybe I've got an idea
about the actual problem, but this definately requires
thorough testing before I'll commit it to CVS. I have to
defer that a bit because I ran out of time by now, and some
more urgent things needs to be done first, so avr-libc 1.2.2
can be rolled.

If you need a patch of the current state for testing, send
me a private mail.

dtostre has wrong output with precision=3.

Testcase: Value 1e-15 results ":.000e-16"

Tested with avr-libc Version 1.0.4, WinAVR-20040720
AVR-STudio Simulator and on ATMega16 Hardware.
