The file Arial MT that comes with Acrobat Reader 4 & 5
(placed in the Resources/Fonts directory under the name
A_____.PFB) contains a space character that cannot be read by FreeType 2.1.9.

Apparently, this is due to the fact that the character's charstring only contains a single "closepath" command, which is interpreted as a syntax error because it doesn't follow a 'rmoveto' or equivalent command.

Note that at least 2.1.5 is reported as being able to ignore the so-called 'error'.
