Quilt will search for patches directories up the directory tree to the root (more precisely, $QUILT_PATCHES, which defaults to patches) and use the first directory it finds. This is intentional to allow people to work in subdirectories. Workarounds to force quilt to create patches in the current directory are to either creata a patches directory where wanted by hand, or set QUILT_PATCHES to a different value so that no such directory will exist up the tree. Okay?

The proposed fix is a bad idea, because when getting started with a new tree, a patches directory may exist, but no .pc directory will be there, and so quilt would fail to find the patches directory.

mquinson@papagos:/tmp$ mkdir test
mquinson@papagos:/tmp$ cd test/
mquinson@papagos:/tmp/test$ mkdir patches
mquinson@papagos:/tmp/test$ mkdir toto
mquinson@papagos:/tmp/test$ cd toto
mquinson@papagos:/tmp/test/toto$ touch toto
mquinson@papagos:/tmp/test/toto$ quilt new test
Patch test is now on top
mquinson@papagos:/tmp/test/toto$ quilt add toto
File toto/toto added to patch test
mquinson@papagos:/tmp/test/toto$

I don't see any problem here. Could you please be more verbose about what the error is (what error message and so on)? I'm quite reluctant to fix a bug I don't see.

Thanks, Mt.

I've a project where I use quilt in one directory, in a top level directory I've a directory called patches.
Now when I try to apply a patch in my quilt enabled project it fails as the upper directory is used.
But in that upper directory there is a patches dir but no .pc directory...
