I like the way the manual works now, in that it works from an example problem (the temporary branch). The permanent branch is the same as the temporary branch, but without merging, so I don't think it merits a separate mention.

The stub branch (I call it the bug fix branch), on the other hand, is a little different in that you are branching from an old revision. I have added a subsection detailing that example (arx.2.2,106).

Not everyone is familiar with, or comfortable with branches. I think the intro should describe several scenarios in which branches would be helpful. Most notably, "stub branches" used for legacy maintenance of already-release versions, "temporary branches" for when a developer goes off to work on a feature that will eventually get merged back in, and "permanent branches", such as to support two different customer editions of a single product.
